Chapter 6: Network
Layer
- Layer 3
- Responsibilities include:
- Insert information into the packet’s header so it can be properly addressed and routed.
- Actually rout the packets to their proper destination.
- The network layer’s protocols determine which path is the best path to send the packets.
- They do not ensure the delivery of the packets and rely on the transport layer to catch any problems and resend it if necessary.
- The Network Layer has routing protocols that build and maintain their routing tables, maps of the network.
- Some of the other protocols that work in the network layer are:
- Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
- Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
- Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)
- Broader Gateway Protocol (BGP)
- Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
